Where to Visit on Your Kenya Safari

The Heart of the Migration

Maasai Mara National Reserve

Kenya’s finest game reserve is the Maasai Mara, the northern fifth of the enormous 6,000sq-mile Ngorongoro/Serengeti/Mara ecosystem. The rest of the system to the south, divided only by wild rivers, is in Tanzania.

The Mara never fails to satisfy the most demanding imaginations of what wild Africa means. It has the highest concentration of lion, perhaps as many as a half million stampeding wildebeest even during the dry season, great rivers saturated with hippos and giant crocs, hyaena always on the prowl, and multitudes of elephant trumpeting. It is a must-visit destination for a bespoke Kenya safari experience.

Northern Kenya's Untamed Soul

Samburu National Reserve

Samburu is really on the edge of everything. It’s where East Africa’s fecund mile-high verdant country plunges into a desert. It’s where the last of very ancient and now incredibly threatened animals still survive. It’s where, until the last couple of decades, you could truly find indigenous tribes practicing their millennium-old folkways.

A luxury safari in Saumburu, Kenya takes you into a totally distinct ecosystem, the Great Northern Frontier. This is why it has such an amazingly unique (and threatened) biodiversity. biodiversity. The list of critically threatened creatures is longer than in all the other East African reserves combined. From the reticulated giraffe, Grevy’s zebra and dozens of unusual, exotic birds. Samburu will be the first to lose its great animals. But today, it is one of the most unusual and unique big game areas for a luxury Kenya safari holiday.

Where Wilderness Meets Skyline

Nairobi & The National Park

Nairobi is the most important city in East Africa, full of promise, energy, art, and enterprise. There is the impressive National Museum for two important discussions: early man and elephants. Some of its most beautiful, historic buildings are on a walking route from parliament to the '“Gentleman’s Bar” of the old Stanley Hotel. An endless number of restaurants and bars of every kind imaginable, countless stores selling everything from curios to precious gems. It’s not a city you’d want to explore on your own, but with careful planner and a good guide, you’ll get a real sense of an important part of East African life.

Additionally, Nairobi National Park is the only place on earth where you can photograph wild rhinos and lions against a backdrop of city skyscrapers. A luxury Kenya safari tour to Nairobi National Park can be a fun induction to the country’s conservation efforts; as can Giraffe Manor, in nearby Karen, where guests can hand feed the giraffes!

Kenya's Enchanted Mountain Realm

Aberdare National Park

The equator goes through the Aberdare. But this is one of the coldest places in Kenya. This is because of its altitude: the highest point in the Aberdare is 11,000’, the lowest point is 7,500’. It is where Kenya’s first game lodge was inaugurated in 1957, by none other than Princess Elizabeth, who was sleeping in a tree bedroom when she learned of her father’s death, and that she’d become Queen of England.

“Treetops” was probably the most famous Kenya safari lodge in Africa for decades. Today, “The Ark” has replaced it. “The Ark” is the only safari lodge in this massive 11,000sq. mile park and it remains incredibly popular. It’s position, in front of a natural water hole and salt lick continues to mesmerize visitors from all over the world: here, the animals come to you!

A luxury Kenya safari to Aberdare will provide you with the most spectacular scenery and monkeys, like the rare Colobus and Sykes. The birdlife is also extraordinary, from the dinosaur-like white-and-black hornbill to the dozens of species of brilliant sunbirds.

When to Visit Kenya for Safari

For over five decades, EW Travel has been the trusted navigator for thousands of explorers seeking the ultimate Kenyan safari adventure.

While Kenya offers spectacular wildlife sightings 365 days of the year, shifting weather patterns and the ebb and flow of the great herds mean that timing is everything. Whether you are looking for the thunder of the Migration or the quiet solitude of the highlands, we start every journey with a conversation about your specific schedule and what you hope to see.

(November - May)

Historically, this is when Kenya sheds its dusty coat and transforms into a lush, emerald paradise. This “Green Season” is a favorite for those who appreciate the finer details of the bush: wildflowers in bloom, migratory birds filling the skies, and the arrival of thousands of newborn animals.

While November and December bring the “short rains”, and April and May see the “long rains”, don’t let the word “wet” deter you. On the equator, rain rarely lingers; it builds into dramatic afternoon theatrics that clear the air and leave the landscape sparkling for your evening sundowner. This is also the best time for a luxury Kenta safari experience without the crowds, offering a sense of exclusive intimacy that is hard to find during the peak months.

Wet Season

(June - October)

If your heart is set on the classic African postcard - golden savannahs and dense wildlife concentrations - the dry season is your window. As the water sources shrink, the animals congregate, making the “Big Five” remarkably easy to spot against the thinning vegetation.

June marks the beginning of the anticipation, as the plains dry out and the Great Migration prepares to enter the Maasai Mara. From July through September, the atmosphere is electric; this is when the herds arrive in their millions, providing the most dramatic game viewing on earth. On a luxury safari in Kenya during this time, be prepared for cooler mornings and dusty afternoons, but know that the payoff is unrivaled: predators are at their most active, and the sheer volume of life on the plains is enough to take your breath away.

Dry Season

Your Questions, Answered

  • While wildlife viewing is excellent year-round on a safari in Kenya, the “best time” depends on your priorities.

For the legendary Great Migration, aim for July through October when the herds are in the Maasai Mara. If you prefer lush, green landscapes and newborn animals (with fewer crowds), the “Wet Season” from January to March is spectacular.

  • Forget any notions of "roughing it." A luxury tented safari in Kenya is more akin to a boutique hotel with canvas walls.

You can expect permanent hardwood floors, king-sized beds with high-thread-count linens, and full en-suite bathrooms with hot running water and flushing toilets. These camps are designed to let the sounds of the African night in while keeping the comforts of a five-star resort firmly in place.

  • Absolutely! Luxury Kenya safari and beach holidays offer the ultimate "reset."

After a week of early morning game drives in the bush, we can whisk you away via a private charter flight directly to the white sands of Diani Beach or the exclusive islands of the Lamu Archipelago. It’s the perfect way to transition from high-adrenaline adventure to total Indian Ocean relaxation.

  • Yes, Kenya is an incredible playground for all ages. We specialize in luxury family holidays in Kenya, focusing on private conservancies where the pace is flexible.

We can arrange "Junior Ranger" programs for kids, private villas with dedicated chefs, and guides who are experts at keeping younger explorers engaged. We handle all the logistics so parents can actually enjoy the sunset.

  • It’s all about the experience you’re chasing. If you want the "Out of Africa" iconic plains, the Maasai Mara is essential. For dramatic views of Mount Kilimanjaro, we’ll include Amboseli. If you’re seeking something rugged and off-the-beaten-path, we look toward the north to Samburu.

When building your bespoke Kenya safari, we start with your interests - whether that’s photography, conservation, or sheer seclusion - to curate the perfect mix of regions.
