Lake Natron is a superb destination for walking safaris located east of Lake Manyara off the normal tourist circuit. The saline lake itself is patterned with a multitude of salt loving microorganisms, making it the main breeding ground in northern Tanzania for more than 2.5 million lesser flamingo.

Just above the lake is Ol Doinyo Lengai, the last little bit of active volcano from the super volcano Ngorongoro that dominated the region 3 million years ago. Lengai is sacred to the Maasai, but tourists can scale its challenging sides to get a "whiff" of the sulphur emissions. Once up Lengai, adventure safaris can continue on the Ngorongoro plain into the crater.
