Uganda's capital city is probably the most pleasant of all East Africa's big capitals, winding up and down hills and through luxurious public gardens. There are a wide variety of restaurants, shops and hotels. Kampala's rapid growth over the last decade has led to several new, very luxurious hotels used as often by businessmen as tourists.

Tourists with time should visit the famous tombs of the ancient Ugandan kings, the Kabaka, are found just outside the city. Before the arrival of the British, Mutesa I the Kabaka (king) of Buganda had chosen the area that was to become Kampala as his favorite hunting grounds.

The city is located about 90 minutes from the international airport. So while visitors coming to Uganda strictly to safari need not overnight here, it does represent Uganda's most modern and lively metropolis.
