June 26 - July 1, 2010
This short Tanzanian safari can be booked only as a pretour to the EWT Family Safari I. Click Here to go to the main family safari description. Unlike the main Family Safari, this program does not include an EWT Safari Manager, but it does include EWT's outstanding driver/guides. It is designed to complement the excellent and comprehensive Kenyan program with a short Tanzanian pretour.
Contact EWT for the best international air fares and for recommendations on how to use your frequent flyer miles. Day 1: ARUSHA/SERENGETI
This program is designed for participants arriving in the morning. If you will arrive in the evening, it should be the night before today. Today whenever you arrive this morning, you'll be personally met and taken into Arusha town for day accommodations at the Arusha Hotel. Around 2:15p, you'll be personally met and privately transferred to the city's nearby local airstrip for the afternoon flight into the Serengeti National Park. You'll be met on arrival by private specially outfitted safari vehicles operated by EWT's professionally trained driver/guides, who will now remain with you for the remainder of the Tanzanian safari. There will be time for a short afternoon game drive before arriving Ndutu Lodge for dinner and overnight. [ - -d]
Day 2: SERENGETI
You are in control of your game viewing. In consultation with your driver/guide who will know the whereabouts of the animals, you can go out all day with a picnic or return to the lodge for meals. This is the beginning of the long dry season in the Serengeti, and while the foliage should still be fairly green, things are beginning to dry out. Predation is on the rise. Your two days in the Serengeti are concentrated in this southwest area, the only area with lakes. The scenery is beautiful and the game abundant. Meals and overnight at Ndutu Lodge. [b-l-d]
Day 3: NGORONGORO
Leave as early as possible to drive through the Ngorongoro Conservation Area enroute Olduvai Gorge for a brief tour. This is a dramatic off-road drive over the Serengeti's endless rolling plains. Around noon you'll descend into Ngorongoro Crater National Park for an afternoon game drive, enjoying your picnic lunch at a lake usually occupied by hippos! At the end of the afternoon ascend the crater for dinner and overnight at Ngorongoro Sopa Lodge. [b-l-d]
Day 4: CRATER/KARATU
Leave before dawn with a picnic breakfast and descend into the crater when the light is fabulous and the chances of finding rhino are the best. Enjoy your picnic breakfast and then continue game viewing, leaving the crater around noon and continuing to the farming community of Karatu. Lunch at Gibb's Farm before a deserved pause in your safari for two wonderful days at this extaordinary safari resort. Dinner and overnight on the farm. [b-l-d]
Day 5: KARATU
The day is free at Gibb's with lots to do. A variety of options are available, including a game drive in Lake Manyara National Park, a visit to the local town, a guided safari walk into the Ngorongoro Conservation Area, tours of farm and gardens, and even the opportunity to consult with a Maasai medicine man. There could be no better setting to catch your breath before beginning the exciting Kenyan safari, and Gibb's new Nantucket cottages are among the most beautiful and luxurious on the trip. The farm's setting on the outer rim of the crater often reminds visitors of Tuscany. Meals and overnight at Gibb's Farm before a deserved pause in your safari for two wonderful days at this extaordinary safari resort. Dinner and overnight on the farm. [b-l-d]
Day 6: JOIN KENYA
After a leisurely breakfast you'll be driven the half-hour to the Manyara airstrip for the 11 a.m. flight to Arusha, and from there connect to Kilimanjaro Airport, and then to Kenya's Wilson airport in Nairobi. There you'll be privately met and transferred into town to join the Kenyan East African Family Safari I. Click Here to continue.
