![]() Lamu is one of the most pleasant, low-key and friendly of the great East African Indian ocean islands. It is the furthest north of the ancient sultanate which stretched from Mozambique to Kenya, and which ruled the coast for a thousand years. Being the furthest north, it has the oldest history, first colonized by Omanis perhaps as early as 1100. During colonial times it was a favorite retreat for British powers sitting in Nairobi, and there are many elegant homes and stone offices that were built during that time. The streets are narrow and the entire island is off-limits to cars. The narrow island is surrounded by excellent beaches, although as a beach destination it is probably not as spectacular as the white sand beaches south of Mombasa and in and around Zanzibar. Rather, a Lamu vacation is often considered similar to a vacation to a Greek island: beautiful seas and fascinating stone towns with an ancient culture. Great shopping, many artists' boutiques, superb dining and a more impeccable tidiness than is often found in Arab island enclaves.
